I'm speaking now of Rockland, Maine. Once just a commercial fishing city perched on the edge of Penobscot Bay, Main Street now glistens with streetlamps, dimly lit restaurants, and sparkling galleries. People drove through Rockland, quickly, to get to Camden or other more scenic parts of Midcoast Maine. Or, they ignored it altogether and took the "short cut" from Warren to Rockport on Route 90. Not anymore. Rockland has become a destination. Convenient flights from Boston make Rockland a hop-skip-and-jump and a perfect destination for a weekend getaway or a desirable retreat any time of year.

Bursting at the seams with amazing dining, galleries, museums, shops and boutiques, Rockland satisfies a cosmopolitan desire combined with small-town appeal and the allure of the sea and working waterfront. Catching up with this renaissance of sorts is Rockland's South End. Still known for the development left behind by MBNA, the South End may have, until very recently, merely been a drive through to more desirable Owls Head and the Saint George peninsula. Today, however, visitors and residence alike enjoy a variety of new businesses and homefronts. The trend is now to "buy and fix up" in Rockland's South End.

One story follows Sandi Dillon, a big city gal who fell in love with a diamond in the rough in the South End. Once a boarding house of sorts, Ripples Inn at the Harbor now beckons guests to explore the new Rockland. Simple, Comfortable, Seaside Chic, Rockland. Something about the lay of the land, alternating fingers of brightly colored foliage and bright blue coastal waters and rivers. It really is a glorious little town! I had the pleasure of staying at the Breakwater Inn & Spa for a recent business trip.

Built in the 1880's and completely refurbished to a contemporary chic , the Breakwater is unique in both history and design. Neutral colors in the spa guest rooms are accented by rich white fluffy towels and robes. Views of the river (with that lovely foliage all around) are a focal point. More traditional, nautically themed Inn rooms are also available. My suite was just down the ship-shaped hall from the spa and fitness center. It had everything I desired; a big bed adorned with many pillows. A big TV, an amazing view, and a specialized vanity area with separate bath. The suite was well-sized with a comfortable sitting area with a large window overlooking the river activities and the ocean beyond. A bottle of wine and welcome note from the hotel manager were purposefully placed for our enjoyment.

While at the Breakwater Inn & Spa, be prepared to be pampered! Start off enjoying the large screen TV and salt water fish tank in the ultra swanky lounge. A guest pantry is well stocked with beverages, snacks, and sherry. The fitness center is a great place to burn some energy, knowing that a generous menu of spa treatments is waiting for you at the other end.

Spa treatments include specialty manicures, pedicures, massage and aromatic baths. My favorite; "Thai on the Table" massage! Follow up with a stroll through the Port's magical shops and galleries and dinner at Stripers, the Breakwater Inn's sister restaurant.

You will not be disappointed with the atmosphere, simple and casually elegant with more amazing water views. I suggest the Tuna Carpaccio for starters, pair it with a Tanqueray and tonic! Follow soon with the clam chowder. After my seafood fix, I enjoyed the half-roasted chicken served with fingerling potatoes and carrots. Delightful! Although Stripers boasts some of the finest seafood dishes in the area, I really enjoyed the chicken complimented by the Belleruche Cotes du Rhone. Menu choices change regularly, but I am certain that any visit to Stripers will deliver.

This was a weekend getaway for me, and I can assure you that I enjoyed every moment. From breakfast until I watched the sun set from Kennebunk Beach. Winding down with a glass of tawny port en suite. If you are looking for a special fall weekend, you must consider the Breakwater Inn & Spa, Kennebunkport.

Camden's Windjammer Weekend

I love going to bed at night when the temps start to cool. It's still warm enough to have a window cracked open in my bedroom, but cool enough to snuggle up under the down comforter. Recently, I had the pleasure of family company from P.A. As I snuggled in for the night, moonshine outside my window, I was drifting off with thoughts of the glorious day ahead.

I knew the weather would be fine, and I was truly looking forward to taking my family to lunch...and then to the Camden Windjammer Festival. Centered around the Camden Harbor waterfront, the town is bustling with just enough visitors to keep things exciting, but we still found a place to park (within a few blocks of the harbor). As we wound our way down to the waterfront, sounds of sea shanties filled the air, and the tall masts decorated with colorful sails and flags came into view.
It couldn't have been a more stellar backdrop. Clear blue skies, hot sun, and a cool seabreeze beckoned us to climb aboard these magnificent ships. The Nathanial Bowditch, the Appledor, Olad, and a host of other beauties welcomed travelers aboard for an in-depth look around. Up and down we went, in and out of bunks, galleys, decks, one boat to the next. The smell of the coal and wood stoves lingers in the galleys, one can just imagine a brisk night to see up top and coming down for a nightcap and a warm-up by the stove. LUXURY! I was like a kid in a candy store! I vowed, again, to one day set sail aboard one of these fine sailing ships to experience bedtime at sea. I am certain that I will return a changed woman.

On land, we enjoyed demonstrations of the maritime trade, old and new. After we got our feel for the history of it all, we meandered up the quaint streets of town to browse the shops and galleries. A perfect day in Maine. A luxury rich in history and strength is found on these fine boats. If you have a chance to enjoy them someday, I strongly suggest that you not miss the opportunity.

Coming Soon! Not "Beal Street" as the name might suggest. After a fine day of shopping and admiring the comings-and-goings of the shipbuilding and harbor, I can't imagine anything more satisfying than a fantastic meal. Now that takes on many different forms for me, and if you have been keeping up with this blog then you know by now that I can find a little bit of luxury in all kinds of situations.

At Beal Street, you get some of the finest comfort food that I have had the pleasure of feasting upon! Their motto best describes the fare; "a tradition of eclectic American cuisine centered around our smokers and our grills". Having seen their ad for many years in Down East Magazine, I finally made the stop. And thank goodness I did so that I can tell you about it!

I came for smoked meat, and that's what I got! I stared with the Smoked Hot Sausage with dipping mustard. Absolutely amazing flavor, and just the right amount of spicy. I grazed on that for quite some time, enjoying a nice cold beer. What a decadent combination.

I blew right passed the salads, although there were plenty of tasty salad meals to choose from; The Beal Street Caesar, Baby Got Goat, and Key West Salad for mentions. But remember, I came for the meat! So onward, to a full rack of St. Louis cut slow roasted BBQ Ribs served up with a side of Japaleno Cornbread. A pat of butter and it melts in your mouth.

If ribs aren't what you're after, Beal Street offers plenty of slow-smoked and "beyond barbeque" items. Something that begs my return is the Seafood and Sausage Jambalaya or perhaps the Crab & Slab (half rack of ribs and a Maine seafood cake).

All of this awaits you in a modern and warm atmosphere in two locations; 215 Water Street, Bath or at 725 Broadway in South Portland. I have not been to the SOPO location yet, but I can assure I am looking forward to a visit. The Bath location offers warmth, understated elegance in a funky urban-type setting. When I was a resident of West Kennebunk and working at the beautiful 1802 House in the port, a favorite "me time" drive was to wind my way down to Cape Porpoise. Sometimes I would get out and meander around the shore, down to the pier, admiring an amazing sunset or Goat Island Light shimmering from a short distance. The air was always warm and it was never too windy. I loved this spot, and I always revisit it when I'm back in the area. I always swore that if I had the chance to move back to Southern Maine, I would search for a home in the town of Cape Porpoise.

A few years back, seven I think, my favorite Southern Maine spot became even better. Chef Peter Morency and his lovely wife Kate, graced this small town with their culinary expertise and exquisite atmosphere. Pier 77 and The Ramp were born! Pier 77 is the more formal of the two options, the Ramp offering casual fare and a charming bar. Peter and Kate humbly suggest that they offer "great food at reasonable prices". This is an understatement, "great food" just does not do Peter's talents justice.

At Pier 77, the atmosphere and the view, the decor and the classic appeal welcome guests upon arrival. Did I mention the view? Serving lunch and dinner, guests are tempted with an appropriate selection of starters. Begin with a classic Wedge salad (iceberg with thick Maytag bleu cheese) or dive into the Oysters Bingo (with spinach, garlic, cream and parmesan cheese). Or, try the steamers three ways: classic with beer, garlic, thyme and oregano; Portuguese with Chorizo, garlic, tomatos, and red chili flakes, or Provencal with white wine, onions, garlic, and fennel.

Carefully prepared entrees include a tremendous Filet Mignon served with mashed potatos, porcini begger's purses, grilled asparagus and a black truffle sauce that will blow you away. The Seafood Stew will satisfy anyone looking for the best of everything; clams, mussels, shrimp and haddock in a tomato saffron broth (get extra bread for dipping, you must not leave a drop of that fabulous broth behind!).

And of course, you cannot visit a tiny fishing village perched on the coast without considering Lobster in the Rough. Lobster, corn, and greens.

For dessert, try the Pear Brandy and Belgium Chocolate Macadamia Torte. A cup of coffee to enjoy the evening, and I'm certain that you will agree that this was an evening well-spent.

During the summer months, I suggest a reservation at Pier 77, the Ramp does not take reservations. Enjoy!

Timbercliffe Cottage B&B, Camden

Not even a passing shower can dampen your summer spirits when in Camden, Maine, the Jewel of the Midcoast. Bangor serves as many things to many people. A gateway to the great North Woods if you are headed South to North. If you are traveling from points North, you may find Bangor the gateway to the Midcoast region of Maine, or a convenient "left" to the popular Acadia coast. Business and leisure travelers are sure to appreciate the convenience of Bangor International Airport. Yes, international!

Whether you have business or pleasure in the immediate Bangor vicinity, or you need a place to regroup before heading North, or to Bar Harbor, Grand Lake Stream, Katahdin, or perhaps coming back from Nova Scotia or Canada, the Four Points by Sheraton at the Bangor Airport is a wonderful find.

In the 1950's this was the site of the Dow Airforce Base, affectionately called "the campus". Land once owned by the Godfrey family soon became the longest landing strip on the Eastern seaboard at 11,440 feet. In 1973, the hotel was built as a Hilton, and operated as Marriot before it's 9 million dollar renovations in 1997. These renovations were so amazingly planned and executed that they will soon be a featured story in Architectural Digest. From that point forward, the hotel operated as a Starwood Hotel.

Known to cater to the self-sufficient traveler, Starwood and the Four Points by Sheraton Bangor offers guests plenty of amenities in a casual, upscale and welcoming atmosphere. I was more than surprised upon my arrival. Parking was convenient and complimentary. The lobby was chic and warm, graced with the signature Starwood "scent". Warm wood tones complimented by a large stone fireplace make the lounge an inviting place to enjoy an Irish Coffee or Martini while you get settled. Oversized sofas and plenty of windows allow you to enjoy the comings-and-goings of "the campus".

Your guest room is well appointed with an unexpected cheery carpet and "Pottery Barn" color scheme. A fan of 70 - 75 degrees, I would normally be complaining of "extreme heat" for anything over 78 degrees. But not this year! We've had more rain here this summer than I can remember. And we've had to get pretty creative to make the best of it.

If you are looking to get into the "thick of it", the 62nd Annual Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland. This will be my son's first year. The festival is a nice blend of activities for the children and adults, alike. There is surely something to please everyone!

This perennial favorite draws crowds by the droves for five straight days of feasting, arts, entertainment, crafts, and fun for the kids. Activities include the 10k run, consuming 20,000 lbs of lobster, amazing blueberry crisp (provided by the Prismglass and the Gallery Cafe of Rockport), one of Maine's finest parades, Lobster Crate Races, the list goes on!

For art and boating enthusiasts, stroll the harbor, browse the exhibit tents and juried art show, eat. Musical guests feature Celtic fiddling sensation Natalie MacMaster with special guest Enter The Haggis, Eric Church with special guest Don Campbell Band, and the finale with Satisfaction: The Stones Experience, acclaimed tribute to the Rolling Stones.

If that doesn't float your boat, then I don't know what will! Feel free to email me for assistance in planning your trip. I had a pretty simple day with my husband and young son, Elliot. It was Elliot's first trip to the beach that likely made an impression on him. He's 14 months old now, and he finally fit into his spiffy swim trunks and looked darn cute in his floppy beach hat.

As a new mom, I relentlessly chased him around the shore with sunscreen while dad helped him walk along the waves hitting the beach. The water was too cold for him to go in much further, only the daring older kids who aren't old enough to realize it is truly freezing, were in the water. After stopping at Reny's in Camden to pick up our jelly-bean-colored beach umbrella, we headed to Lucia beach not far from our home in Owls Head. Granted, Crocketts Beach is just at the end of our road, but I was ready to brave the crowds who were out in full force to enjoy the heat and sun that has seemingly taken forever to arrive this year.

As I watched my husband and son build Elliot's first sand hump, complete with rocks and pebbles, I reflected upon how lucky I am. Covered in sand and zinc, my young son was feeling absolute luxury, squinting up at me in delight as he realized "the beach" like never before in his life.

Prismglass Gallery and Cafe - A Treasure in Rockport!

Start off with the Ginger Cosmo, the Gallery Cafe signature cocktail. Tucked into Bangor's financial district at 175 Exchange Street, Thistles makes an excellent stop for both business and pleasure.

My husband and I stopped in for lunch while we were waiting for the infamous pop up to be readied for the season. I might as well be honest, I lovingly refer to the pop up as my "lake house". I will have to post about it sometime. I digress...

I loved Thistles. With it's funky modern interior, I was welcomed by the smell of amazing food. I knew that the Latin-inspired cuisine was going to be a new and exciting experience for me. I feasted on Argentinian Beef Empanadas with the suggested Malbec Kaiken, Lujan de Cuyo. The grouping was so lovely, so alive with flavor! The chimichurro sauce absolutely burst in my mouth, perfectly complimenting the modestly seasoned ground beef and pastry.

My husband enjoyed the Argentinian seasoned steak, also with the Malbec. Although a more conservative selection on the menu, it was no less fantastic. Expertly cooked medium rare and seasoned just enough to add that special Thistles touch that chef/owner Santiago Rave has so exquisitely mastered.

www.thistlesrestaurant.com

Can't go Wrong With SummerMaine!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 221px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0bchKzskHHI/SmHPO5Ty9nI/AAAAAAAAAfc/qgcfZT6u3a4/s320/exteriorwatersideweb3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359792886356571762" />
My best friend, Fletcher Smith, owns and manages an exquisite property management business here in Midcoast Maine. Luxury camping? As in, camping out-of-doors in the wild Maine woods? Absolutely! Believe it or not, a good Maine camping trip is not to be overlooked. But, be advised! Not all campgrounds are created equal. And being particularly particular about my choice of campgrounds, I am not easily converted into a "happy camper".

However, this changed for me last year on August 6th weekend for my husband's 35th-ish birthday, we headed for the great Maine woods of Grafton Notch, right up against the New Hampshire border just outside of Bethel Maine.

So often, when trying to select a nice place to camp that offers:

Privacy

Clean bathrooms

Clean anything

Compounded by beautiful scenery, easy access, and little to no crowds can be a daunting if not impossible task. I can honestly say "Eureka!" The weekend that we chose to camp in Newry just so happened to be at the tail end of a massive rain spell, and these campsites were situated pleasantly along a river. There was a flood advisory that night, but off we went with our pop-up in tote. (Yes, I love my pop-up complete with shower, fridge, furnace, linens and tablewear).

Now I'm not sure if we had the place to ourselves because of the recent flood warnings, because Grafton Notch Campground is fairly new, or if it's really just that good. We chose site 13 which offered plenty of space and a nice short walk to an exceptionally clean outhouse. We enjoyed the beautiful night with our red zin, a wonderful meal of steaks, corn, and potatoes cooked fireside, and strawberry shortcakes.

In the morning, I was greeted by cool breezes and warm sunshine. I decided to stroll the rest of the campground and was absolutely delighted at what I found. I guess its fair to say that words cannot describe how immaculately clean the bathrooms were, big huge private walk-in shower with WATER PRESSURE! Outlets, clean sinks, the smell of cedar, it was truly as nice as any home or hotel bathroom. All of the outhouses were spotless and well-maintained. Nestled in a tremendous gorge surrounded by the splendor of the Mahoosuc Range with the river running by, Grafton Notch Campground gets my absolute approval should you decide to try a different kind of luxury.

www.campgrafton.com

<blogitemurl>

</blogitemurl>

Old Port Style Right in the Heart of Things

It's really no surprise that one of America's best cities would house a variety of fine lodging experiences. The West End of Portland is host to several fine bed & breakfasts, and the "Old Port" and Financial District boasts some of the cities most exciting accommodations. I think that one of my favorites to date is the Portland Harbor Hotel. The marketing tagline "Where Luxury Comes to Life" is absolutely no understatement.

With old world inspiration, this gem stands proudly in the heart of the Old Port's shopping and dining districts. Wonderful beds adorned with down comforters graced in blue toile, pillow top mattresses, a selection of comfy pillows, and full luxury baths make it hard to leave your room despite the city's beckon call.

Take advantage of Starbucks Coffee in the morning, and enjoy breakfast in the lovely courtyard during the warmer months. In the evenings, be tempted by Eve's At the Garden Restaurant and swanky martini bar. The area's only four diamond hotel will not disappoint!

My pick at the Portland Harbor Hotel: The Jacuzzi Suite

"The evening turndown service, and chocolate novelty will indulge your senses and put you in a restful, blissful sleep. Through the french door and down two steps, is your private stone patio with comfortable Adirondack chairs set amidst a secluded perennial garden." ~ Bethel Hill Bed & Breakfast Website

An 1805 Sea Captain's Home is a Kennebunkport Tradition

I recall my first real bed and breakfast experience in the small seaport town of Kennebunkport. In early spring of 1997, I moved from P.A. to West Kennebunk into a tiny little one-bedroom house. The flowers were just beginning to show their true colors, the air was still cool during the day but the sun shined brightly, burning off the fog around the harbor. I was on the hunt for a very special place where my best girlfriend, also visiting from P.A., could spend a few nights with her significant other. So, as the newbie in town, I headed down to "the port" to begin my search.

In a town like Kennebunkport, it's no small task to visit all of the incredibly fine lodging. Dotted with exquisite sea captains' homes, a few grand nostalgic hotels from a by-gone era, and graceful "cottages", I certainly had my work cut out for me. In and out I went, gathering brochures, chatting with innkeepers and concierges, adoring all of the splendor of the sea and my new "home town".

Finally, I settled on a "home" situated pleasantly on the Village Green. A short stroll to all of Kennebunkport's fine shops, galleries, and restaurants, the Captain Jefferds Inn Bed and Breakfast spoke to me. A stately white mansion with black shutters, it was graced with spansive lawns in a gorgeous "residential" neighborhood of other fine inns and homes. Peeking over the knoll I could see the river meandering towards the open sea and Kennebunk Beach.

Built in 1804 by Daniel Walker and completed in 1805, the Captain Jefferds Inn was given to his daughter, Mary, as a wedding present, not an uncommon thing to do in this era and area. She married Captain William Jefferds, and the mansion stayed in the family until 1884. It became an inn in 1980, and over the years with love and care has become the incredibly luxurious and comfortable inn that proudly stands today.

You will find no shortage of comfort and amenities here. Rooms are adorned with linens, classic window treatments and decor, tile baths, whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, and exceptionally comfortable beds. There is plenty of room to spread out, but guests are sure to maintain that cozy and personal touch that one expects from a small inn. Sara and Erik Lindblom have spared no expense. A lovely sunroom is the perfect place to enjoy coffee, tea, wine, and fabulous cookies. Gardens and meandering paths around the property beckon you outdoors and onto the Village Green to enjoy the salty air and beautiful gracious homes.

The attentive staff is ready to help you get settled, make dinner reservations, and suggest all of the things that you must see and do in Kennebunkport. Or, simply enjoy your private room and all of the goodies within.

Most Luxurious Room: The Baxter Suite

"Baxter is a fabulous newly renovated rustic luxury suite. Inspired by the old Maine camps, this room has a unique king size wooden bed, gas fireplace, terra-cotta tiled bath with walk-in shower and a large two person whirlpool tub. This is a very romantic and private room with it's own entrance and screened in sitting area." ~ Captain Jefferds Inn website

Coming Soon!

Thanks for your patience while I work to complete this blog format.
